The buoy was deployed 15 nautical miles west of Lance's position at the time. General situation very solid ice, no openings. We wanted to deploy the accompanying AFAR on an area with little snow, so deliberately aimed for a refrozen area - level ice with only ~2cm snow cover. This refrozen area was approx 50m across and surrounded by small ridges & thicker ice floes. The surrounding floes had the 4 0cm snow cover that seems normal for the area. It was a bright sunny day. A Magna probe survey (snow depth) was made after the deployment was complete.
25 thermistors on the BAS buoy were visible above the snow surface, one thermistor in the snow and 2 in freeboard.
